SHOOK INDUSTRIES made the desserts for it’s restaurants in Beijing starting in 1996. We made chocolate chip cookies, cheesecakes, brownies, and others. We were asked by the first Starbucks in China to make the pastries for them. The three cheesecakes we made at Schlotzsky’s Deli in Beijing are now also sold by Starbucks in China but a different quality than we made. We were one of the first restaurant chains in Beijing to make Cappuccinos, lattes, espresso coffee drinks, and fine quality pastries.

We have assisted international companies with information and marketing advice regarding entering the China market.  In 2008 and 2009 we provided suggestions regarding entering the China market, for Sweet Street Desserts in the US. Sweet Street makes excellent quality pastries.

SHOOK INDUSTRIES developed the franchise licensing plan, and selected Chinese investors, and helped train the more than 100 staff and management of the first Schlotzsky's to open in China. SHOOK also arranged the business and training delegations travel to and from China and the United States. SHOOK also developed one of the first China territorial franchise licensing contracts which was used in China.

SHOOK INDUSTRIES was one of the first companies to establish franchise licenses in China.

The first license was for Schlotzsky's Deli, which opened several in Beijing and other areas beginning in 1996. Before the China Franchise Association was formed, Mr. Shook assisted the China office that was responsible for establishing the China Franchise Association, with information regarding franchise licensing contracts, and methods for China to oversee the development of franchise regulations in China. Prior to this Mr. Shook provided valuable information regarding how to best enter the China market, to food and beverage companies such as: Beatrice Hunt Wesson, Gallo, Tropicana, and many others.

Mr. Shook also established one of the first Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprises which was authorized to distribute food and beverages in China. Prior to this foreign companies were not allowed to own food and beverage companies in China.

In 2006, Mr. Shook was asked by the Colombian Embassy, and the Colombian Coffee Association, to advise them regarding best methods for market development of Colombian coffee and specifically the Juan Valdez Colombian coffee in China. Juan Valdez Colombian coffee is one of the most famous brands in the world. In 2005 during the US Advertising Week Juan Valdez was voted as the most important advertising icon in the United States beating other popular ones like Ronald McDonald the Energizer bunnies, Charlie the Tuna and Nike.
